Whose rules do you really live by?

Whose idea of success have you been working so hard toward? If you’re following any course at all, shouldn’t it be yours? That might seem obvious, but it’s one of those things that’s easier said than done.

Even when your life looks pretty great on paper, you might be starting to wonder if this is all there is. You know how to be goal-oriented, you’ve taken some risks. Whether in your personal life or your career path, you’ve Done The Work and Put Yourself Out There.

So why isn’t it working?

I want to be real with you — no matter how much work you’ve already done, how clear your vision is, or how strong your sense of purpose— chances are you’re working with a rule book you didn’t write. And there’s no shame in that! We all are, because we all live in this messy complicated world full of systems that weren’t built for us and definitely weren’t built for our success.

One way or another you learned “what it takes to make it.” Someone or something in your life told you who to be and how to behave in order to get sh*t done. Then you did!

Or you didn’t, exactly. Maybe, after hearing one “no” too many, you started believing that you didn’t have what it takes. Even when you Do Everything Right it still feels like you’re coming up short. Why is that?!

The problem isn’t you, I promise.

Too often we’re stuck using the wrong definitions for leadership and success. When we try to picture A Leader or The Boss he still looks like a white guy in a suit. He’s still got those traits (assertive, outspoken, commanding) that dominate our vision of leadership even when they’re not effective or downright toxic.

And though you might see through it, decision makers in your life still measure you by that standard. Then you’re caught in yet another no-win situation.

It’s still true that when womxn show traditionally masculine qualities, we’re labelled “aggressive” “disagreeable” and “bossy” instead of “leadership material.” Damned if you do, right?

And now the #bossbabes and #girlbosses have arrived to offer a prettier solution. All you have to do is be assertive and approachable, driven and easygoing, effortless and perfectly styled. (With bonuses for higher vibes, “magic” herbs, and faux spirituality.)

Neither of these are great options, to put it mildly. Never mind that they’re two faces of the same competitive, outdated, patriarchal trap. In both cases, the thing you’re pushed to change is you.

But you’re not the problem. And you deserve better than the same tired scripts repackaged.

We’re constantly told that our success depends on how well we can play by these rules.

You deserve a better story.

There’s a better way than double standards repackaged as empowerment, and guilt-tripping packaged as Instagram inspo.

They tell the same story: that who you are isn’t good enough, and if you want to win you have to follow their rules exactly. But, if it doesn’t work out, well you probably weren’t “manifesting” hard enough. Nothing to do with the myths and biases that bolster our institutions. Nothing to do with the privileges and resources you may or may not have.

But you have better stories to tell. Instead of the ones that ignore your challenges and judge you when you aren’t using your “super powers,” you can craft stories that

  • take a real look at who you are in the world,

  • value your actual experiences, and

  • call the obstacles in your path by their true names.

It’s tough out there, and there’s nothing weak or wrong with you when you call it out. When you recognize and accept that our social and economic systems are rooted in a competitive, outdated, soul-crushingly patriarchal mess, and empower yourself to reject that structure -- you don’t just build a new story, you start building new systems.

How’s that for changing the world?

Your lived experience, your perspective, the authentic strengths you’ve built as a human and in your career -- all of that matters, and we need you. We need you because this other BS isn’t doing it.

A little about me

Right now my kids are playing video games in the next room, the dogs are barking, and there are dishes in the sink. It’s not cocktails on a beach, but it’s part of the life I’m stubbornly, intentionally, and happily creating for myself— with all our changing circumstances and upheavals. Soon, the kids will go outside and the dishes will get done, but at the moment, I’m choosing to write.

As a single mom, an entrepreneur, and a tenaciously open-hearted human being, I know life’s a complicated, sometimes messy, astoundingly joyful thing. I’ve learned to navigate major (and minor) transitions more confidently by owning my story, values and priorities, so that in an uncertain world, I can always know I’m making the choices that are right for me.

“Liza, quite literally, changed my life. She empowered me to own my strength, my voice, and my power. It is quite rare to find someone that is powerful but also empathetic, a good leader but also someone who pushes others to the limelight, and Liza is all of those things. I highly recommend working with her in whatever capacity possible. Thank you Liza!”
